Evidence as the foundation of action
All programmes and recommendations are grounded in robust data, transparent evaluation, and scientific review.
Clinician-led. Evidence-driven. Patient-centred.
Turning evidence into patient outcomes for care delivered in conflict, disaster, and austere environments.
Mission
Athena International Health Foundation turns evidence into patient outcomes, supporting clinicians and health systems to deliver safer, more effective treatment in conflict, disaster, and austere environments.
Led by clinicians, the foundation generates, validates, and implements high-integrity, evidence-driven solutions that improve patient outcomes across primary care, hospital systems, and military medical services.
Through clinician-led research, system optimisation, and quality improvement, Athena strengthens health systems and ensures that patients in disrupted settings receive high quality, safe, effective, and scientifically grounded care.
Vision
Athena envisions integrated civilian and military health systems that are resilient, data-driven, and capable of delivering high-quality care in any operational environment.
Principles
All programmes and recommendations are grounded in robust data, transparent evaluation, and scientific review.
Activities are led by clinicians and scientists with extensive clinical and operational experience.
Research is designed to move rapidly from laboratory and field evidence into real-world clinical practice, policy, and system redesign.
Structured quality improvement methodology and pathway redesign help optimise patient outcomes, safety, effectiveness, and efficiency.
Interventions are tailored to austere, conflict-affected, and disaster-disrupted environments.
The foundation maintains scientific and ethical independence, transparent governance, and responsible partnerships.
Athena works across the full continuum of care, from primary healthcare providers to public health authorities.
Headquartered in Ukraine with international branches, Athena collaborates with partners in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and beyond.
What we do
Athena supports any organisation delivering healthcare, from primary care clinics to tertiary hospitals and military medical services, with a particular focus on austere, conflict-affected, and disaster-disrupted environments.
Design and conduct translational research to address urgent clinical and surgical challenges.
Translate evidence into practical clinical and surgical guidelines, infection prevention strategies, and operational protocols.
Support quality improvement and clinical redesign initiatives to optimise outcomes, reduce complications, and improve efficiency.
Provide clinician-led training, mentorship, and technical assistance in clinical and surgical practice.
Support ministries of health, defence medical services, and healthcare networks in building resilient, evidence-driven systems.
Advocate for rigorous scientific evidence, surgical standards, and quality improvement methodology in frontline care and humanitarian response.
For-purpose consulting arm
Alongside its non-profit foundation, Athena operates a for-purpose consulting arm that partners with health systems, hospitals, primary care networks, and military medical commands to optimise clinical performance and patient outcomes.
This arm provides technical advisory, system redesign, quality improvement implementation, and translational research services.
Revenue generated through consulting is reinvested into the non-profit foundation to support independent research, innovation, and implementation programmes that advance evidence-based care in high-risk and underserved environments.
